Taiwan’s new Cloud Leopard variant at the DSA 2018
- April 19, 2018
Taiwan’s state-owned Materiel Production Center (MPC) and the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST) has unveiled at the Defence Services Asia 2018 (DSA 2018) a model of a new variant of its indigenously developed Cloud Leopard (Yunpao) armoured vehicle fitted with an integrated mortar system.
The 24-tonne vehicle, which is based on the Cloud Leopard Type 2, is equipped with MPC’s recently developed Advanced 81/120 mm Mobile Mortar Weapon System, a model of which was also displayed at DSA 2018.
Current options include the CM32/33 APC, CM34 equipped with a turret-mounted 30mm cannon, and a mortar carrier fitted with the MPC’s 81mm or 120mm tube advanced mobile mortar weapon system.
The MPC produces an anti-personnel and anti-materiel mortar round similar to the M374A3 high-explosive round, with a maximum range of 6,300m and loaded with 1,000 steel balls ‘to increase lethality’.
The MPC indicated that plans to produce a command vehicle are not yet ready, but the IFV can be outfitted with an NCSIST-produced ‘panoramic vehicle imaging system’ capable of infrared and fused imaging.
