Lockheed Martin secured a $480 million U.S. Air Force contract to develop the Air-Launched Rapid Response Weapon (ARRW), a hypersonic weapon prototype, the U.S. Department of Defense announced on 13 August.
“We are going to go fast and leverage the best technology available to get hypersonic capability to the warfighter as soon as possible,” Secretary of the Air Force Heather Wilson said in an official statement.
The ARRW effort is one of two hypersonic weapon prototyping efforts being pursued by the Air Force to accelerate hypersonic research and development. Work on the ARRW is scheduled to be completed by November 2021. The contract falls under the company’s missiles and fire control business located in Orlando, Florida.
