India to purchase S-400
- September 28, 2018
The Indian Government has agreed to purchase five S-400 air defense missile systems worth over $5.5 billion.
The deal is likely to be signed ahead of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India next week. “The negotiation with Russia on the S-400 have reached almost the final stage, we’ll have to see it if it’s signed before the Russian President’s visit. But the negotiations are almost complete,” Indian Defense Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said.
India will have to pay 15 percent of total costs on inking the contract, while the rest will be linked to deliveries of the systems.
The Indian Air Force (IAF), which operates the country’s air defenses, is expected to receive first S-400 squadron within 24 months after the contract’s signing. The rest will be delivered within the next 4-5 years.
