Russia’s only aircraft carrier damaged
- October 31, 2018
Russia’s aircraft carrier the Admiral Kuznetsov was damaged when its giant floating dry dock sank after an accident in the Arctic port of Murmansk.
Russian media is reporting the 59,000 ton ship has had a 20 sqm hole ripped in its hull after a 70 ton crane lost balance as the floating dry dock it was attached to sank.
“There is no financial assessment, we look at the damage – there is nothing terrible there, and I think we will deal with it ourselves. As soon as we make the assessment, I will inform you. This won’t be a big sum,” Head of the United Shipbuilding Corporation Alexei Rakhmanov said. There is nothing “scary” about this damage, he noted.
Admiral Kuznetsov was towed to a nearby repair plant where it will continue its refit. The carrier started the refit in April 2018 and was expected to be returned to the navy in 2021. It is not clear whether the incident will have an impact on the ship’s repair schedule.
