- November 3, 2018
South Korean Air Force will receive its first Airbus A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT).
The first tanker is expected to arrive on 12 November in South Korea and receive various acceptance tests for about one month.
During the acceptance test, the South Korean Air Force intends to deploy the A330 MRTT tanker to refuel the service’s F-15K and KF-16 combat jets, a military official said.
According to Yonhap, The Air Force plans to introduce three additional tankers next year, which are all A330 MRTTs built by Airbus Defence and Space. The tanker is 59 meters in length and 60 meters in width, and is capable of carrying up to 240,000 pounds (108 tons) of fuel.
Fuel is supplied to fighters at predetermined aerial locations. For that purpose, two pilots and a refueling controller operate the refueling boom. The Air Force has already selected tanker pilots, mechanics and refueling controllers, and completed their pre-training.
