The US Navy has received USS Indiana
The Virginia-class attack submarine USS Indiana (SSN 789) was delivered to the US Navy by Huntington Ingalls Industries’ Newport News Shipbuilding division on June 25.
USS Indiana is the 16th submarine of the Virginia class. The ship began construction in 2012 and is scheduled to commission in September 2018.
The nuclear-powered submarine successfully concluded its sea trials earlier this month.
“We are proud to deliver Indiana to the Navy. For the nearly 4,000 shipbuilders who participated in construction of the boat, there is nothing more important than knowing that this vessel will support the Navy’s missions.” said Dave Bolcar, Newport News’ vice president of submarine construction in a release.
The USS Indiana is a Block III submarine, which features a redesigned bow with enhanced payload capabilities. It has two large-diameter Virginia payload tubes, each capable of launching six Tomahawk cruise missiles.
